People say the R.A.T distortion pedal is best for the 303, but I haven't tried one.

How are the gigs going Kai?

Hey guys!

I dont know about anything of those hardware dist pedals, but I just found this plugin: http://www.greenmachine.opuscases.de/html/version_ii.html
Go and try it! Its really something Smile If you tweak it a bit you will get the classic 303 dist that (I) looked for Wink

Hope this will help you Kai Surprised

Regards,

/Robert

I always thought the boss mt2 metal zone distortion pedals were very effective with a TB.. Frank D Noise From Brain Records, uses a mt2 I am sure..
He does the nastiest tearing acid.. Though Kai what did you use to make 10 Kleine Bassdrums tear like they do..

The sickest attempt to distort a signal i've heard so far was a modified tapedeck used by some friends of mine (da jormas). They overdrove the input signal and managed to read the output signal from the tapehead - simply wicked.

I have also heard some pretty sick stuff using the Distressor. Pluginwise i can still recommend Alien Connections Revalver (PC DX plugin). That's the way best and flexible amp/speaker sim i have ever heard (as heard on "Phat Planet" by Leftfield). And of course Banane Electronique for Reaktor 4, that's insane.

Cheers,
Ronny

well, I haven't got a real 808, just DIY.
but I guess there is something wrong in my circuit because it doesn't sound that great as many people say. but perhaps it is allright and I just don't like it. don't know. never tested a real one Sad

My personal choice:

Hard clipping on my good old Mackie 1604 console or on a good Soundcraft one.

The Orange Boss/Roland guitar pedal. Not sure of the model at the moment but it was cheap - like 130 Australian (50 or so Euro)

Does the job fine.

However, an API or Neve mic preamp overdriven crazy will be much better and give cleaner signal

My best (eh, roughest and toughest) hardware distortion is a completely overdriven mic input on a mixing desk with parametric EQ, where I flip the EQ parameters alternatively up and down all the way for the left channel, and alternatively down and up for the right channel. Left and right signals are then summed to a mono output, which can then replace or be mixed with the original signal (the 303 also is mono, off course).

I like the Ibanez Fuzz-Wah pedal as well, since the Fuzz emphasizes the specific frequencies targeted by the Wah pedal. User interface is great, just step on it. Hands on the knobs (or mouse), feet on the pedals! It's basically another overdriven filter on top. I use it together with the Ibanez Bass wah pedal in 'stereo' sometimes.

I also like the Boss SE-70, since it also has plenty of other fx (chorus, reverb, compression, flanger, phaser, EQ, etc.) which can all be used together in a chain.
I use this only for low frequencies, as the digital fx (distortion is analogue though, the rest isn't) can't handle the higher frequencies properly.
