anyone got any good tips for how they process abl into their mixdowns? Always have difficulty getting it to sit right in the mix whilst maintaining its weight in the mix. So many dips and highs.

I tend to run two instances one playing down low without any tweaking that runs as a bassline. Then another instance with a high pass that does the tweaking lines then maybe some light chorus fx and compression. Sometimes a slight delay and some reverb too but only a touch.

i usually have a compressor on it, with a ratio of 5:1, threshold of -20dB and whatever gain suits the track

IMHO it's quite easy to end up with tracks that sounds cool alone but are hard to blend into a mix. So I use EQ to keep different tracks competing for the same frequences.

These guys have it right.

I usually only use compression when I'm pounding the peaks with distortion, otherwise, it's not always requireed (although, put the FINAL mix thru a compressor/limiter, ALWAYS!).

Integrates well with my Ableton setup.

THX,
JD
