I tend to have a slowish attack and quick release - lets the transients thru and brings up the sustain. around 10-20ms for both, but then twiddle to suit.
However I use mainly UAD plugs which dont have very accurate markings so tend to twiddle by ear. Sometimes a very quick attck (UAD VCA VU compressor) is used, which has the benefit of no attack or release knobs to use.
A good, heavy freeware compressor for drums is audio damage rough rider.

I also use a brilliant plugin called the SPL transient designer, really lets you fiddle with the attack and sustain, great on 909 but even better on 808. SPL also sell a native version, and there are other transient shapers around.
